Goodenough Abe Bailey Scholarship

This Scholarship enables talented . . .

This Scholarship enables talented South African postgraduate students to join Goodenough College's lively and welcoming community whilst undertaking their studies in London. Goodenough Director, Alice Walpole: 'From 2016-2021, the Abe Bailey Trust has supported ten Goodenough College Abe Bailey Scholars studying in fields ranging from international health policy to opera performance. The number of scholars and degree of individual financial support varies slightly from year to year, depending on the scholars' circumstances. During the current 2021-22 academic year, we are delighted to host two Abe Bailey Scholars, each funded, enabling them to participate in our supportive, immersive, collegiate community without the burden of financial concerns. The College is deeply grateful to the Abe Bailey Trust for contributing to the scholars' individual success, strengthening the College's ties to South Africa and increasing the diversity of our international cohort.'

Information on applying for a Goodenough Abe Bailey Scholarship may be found on the Goodenough College website (goodenough.ac.uk). Applications from former Abe Bailey bursars are particularly welcomed.

A current scholarship holder: 'I was an Abe Bailey Travel Bursar in 2018. On this tour, I stayed at Goodenough College - I knew that I wanted to return to Goodenough College if I ever studied in London. I applied for the Goodenough Abe Bailey Scholarship as I did not have the financial means to do so. The Scholarship has helped me live comfortably in London whilst pursuing my Master's. I come from a disadvantaged background in South Africa; therefore, coming to study and live in London would always require me seeking financial assistance to achieve my ambitions. I plan to use my Master's to contribute both globally and in South Africa. I want to create greater public value for society and make the lives of the disadvantaged easier. (Riedwaan Fakier, Goodenough Abe Bailey Scholar 2020/21).'
